Walks in Cumbria > Five millers walk The Miller's Way 2

The millers at Market Cross in CarlisleREAL millers from Carr’s have completed the Miller’s Way 2 from Carlisle to Silloth.

The men took just over nine hours to successfully navigate the 25-mile route - a sequel to the original 51-mile Miller’s Way from Kendal to Carlisle.

There were a couple of boggy sections but the weather was good and we had a great day out,” said Ian Caulfield, who works at the Carr’s flour mill at Silloth.

Joining him for the long march west were milling colleagues Peter Reeves, Stephen Burlinson, Bill Aymes, Robin Pegram. Company cleaner Carole Jones was the sixth member of the walking squad.

The group set out from the Market Cross in Carlisle at 8am and arrived at the mill gates in Silloth at about 5.15pm.

Andrew Carr - the step great great grandson of company founder Jonathan Dodgson Carr - launched the walk last month. It was plotted by veteran Cumbria rambler Stan Benson to celebrate the company’s 19th century westward industrial expansion when the mill was built to supply flour for Carr’s original Carlisle biscuit factory.

The same group of walkers have now set aside three days to complete the Kendal to Carlisle route (The Miller's Way) which was launched in 2006 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Carrs.

They are raising money for the Air Ambulance and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
