Donations > Carr's Millers are the pride of Cumbria

MILLERS from Carr’s Flour raised more than two thousand pounds for charity after a cross-county trek.

Beneficiaries were the Great North Air Ambulance and Allerdale Multiple Sclerosis Society - each to the tune of £1,130.

Carr's Millers are the pride of Cumbria

Miller Ian Caulfield and five colleagues from the Silloth mill walked the 51-mile Miller’s Way from Kendal to Carlisle over three days earlier this month.

“The weather was mixed but the scenery along the route is terrific in places,” he said

The route was opened in 2006 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the original walk undertaken by baker Jonathan Dodgson Carr when he established Carr’s Flour in Carlisle in 1831.

Joining Ian for the long march were Peter Reeves, Stephen Burlinson, Bill Aymes, Robin Pegram and Carole Jones.

Jan Hawkins, senior co-ordinator for the Great North Air Ambulance, visited the Silloth mill steam engine museum to receive the cheque.

“This is a fantastic sum of money that will help to keep the Pride of Cumbria helicopter in the air,” she said.

“It is involved in about 1000 missions each year and we rely entirely on private donations for funding.”

Joining her was Sonia Rigg from the Allerdale Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“We raise about £10,000 every year so this donation is a massive contribution to our coffers and I can’t thank the people from Carr’s enough,” she said.

“It will help us to help even more people suffering from MS with things like home visits and trips to the physiotherapist.”

Miller Peter Reeves has family experience of the disease and praised the invaluable work of the Allerdale MS Society which helps dozens of sufferers in the area.

The Miller’s Way walkers were sponsored by family and friends and Carr’s Flour made a donation of £500.
