Kendal School wins the First-ever Carrs Junior Breadmaking Competition
The Competition: In
2005, children at Key Stage 2 from six primary schools in each of the county’s
six local authority districts entered recipes for healthy loaves.
The WINNER: The Levens School entry was judged
to be the best after Carrs asked hundreds of people to taste-test the loaves
at its summer shows around the UK.
THE CELEBRATIONS: Lumley
Castle hosted a medieval banquet for the children which included specially
themed bread songs from entertainers, a children’s magician and a bird
of prey demonstration.
150
children from Cumbria celebrated the finale of the first-ever Carrs Junior
Breadmaker Awards at a special medieval banquet at Lumley Castle.
This year’s pilot competition was won by Levens School, near Kendal, with a recipe for damson bread - view (and try!) the winning recipe.
Other entries included a low-fat cheese and sun-dried tomato and coriander loaf, and a honey and orange zest loaf.
Caroline Dale, Marketing Manager for Carrs Flour, said:
"There is an obesity crisis amongst young people and we, as a company, want to play our part to help children get into healthier eating patterns.
"We worked very successfully with Cumbria Healthy Schools and the response from all the children who took part was very positive indeed."
Mike Telford, manager of the Cumbria Healthy Schools Programme, added:
"We were delighted to support Carrs Flour in piloting this competition which has been a winner with us and the schools who took part.
"Healthy Eating is one of the key themes of the National Healthy School Standard, and wholesome bread is an important part of a balanced diet."
Levens teacher Eileen Mason said:
"Carrs timed this competition at the end of the summer term really well and it fitted in very well with the curriculum."
Ms
Dale added:
"The banquet was a wonderful way to celebrate the success of the Junior Breadmaker Awards.
"All the schools put a lot of thought into their recipes but the Levens School entry was particularly good.
"Not only did they taste-test their recipe at the school food club but they presented their recipe in a detailed brochure with full-colour photographs about how they went about it.
"We were very impressed by the enthusiasm and detail of the Levens School entry."
The five other schools that took part were Caldew Lea, Carlisle; St Begh’s, Whitehaven; Long Marton, Penrith; Lorton, Cockermouth and Greengate, Barrow.
Panasonic donated a breadmaker to each of the six schools who took part. For more information on Panasonic and its products go to www.panasonic.co.uk
