Croeso cynnes Cymreig (a warm Welsh welcome) to the October breadmaker of the month - Ysgol Pennant School in Powys
PUPILS at this Welsh medium school in North Wales used bread making to expand their English vocabulary.
The children of Ysgol Pennant also decided to learn about breads from around the globe - prompted by a project about an Indian village.

“We researched, looked at, tasted and evaluated recipes from different parts of the world,” explained Years 2 & 3 teacher Mrs Harding.
“We also carried out experiments with yeast and learned about the necessary conditions needed for it to work successfully"
The bread-making project was carried out during design technology classes.
“We were delighted to receive your flour and eagerly went ahead to plan and complete the module,” added Mrs Harding.
“We also looked at different recipe books to find different types of bread rolls and extended our English vocabulary in the process.”
She was delighted by the children’s enthusiasm during the bread making classes.
“Everyone had so much fun making bread we cannot wait to make some more. I hope everyone at Carr’s Breadmaker like our photos and will enjoy looking at our work!.
Caroline Dale, marketing manager of Carrs Breadmaker, said it was the first time a school had used bread making to learn words from another language.
“If only I could brush up on my Spanish in the same way,” she quipped.
“But that is the versatility of bread making in schools, it can be adapted and moulded to fit so many different aspects of the national curriculum.”

Ian Griffiths, product manager at Panasonic, added:
“This is bread making with a linguistic twist - another example of schools putting bread and flour to useful educational advantage.”
Each month throughout 2009
Panasonic and Carrs donated a breadmaker and a supply of flour to the school submitting the best portfolio of work.
