Carrs Breadmaker

Flour and education

Kirkby’s Park Brow Community Primary School on Merseyside is the May 2009 winner of a Panasonic breadmaker and a supply of Carrs Breadmaker flour

Bread - the hugely popular BBC sitcom - was set in Liverpool and the latest makers of ‘bread’ are also from Merseyside. Pupils of Park Brow Community Primary School, Kirkby are our bakers of the month!

Thirty-one children from Year Three invented an astonishing array of loaves using our flour.

They included:

  • Bacon, eggs and beans;
  • Bananas and cream;
  • Sausage and tomato;
  • Strawberries, choc chips and fudge;
  • Raisins currants, apple and chocolate spread.

Teacher Steve Whetnall made the breadmaking project cross curricular.

It involved maths as the children carried out surveys and used bar charts,” he explained.

Geography was covered as they explored breads from different countries and science involved the action of sugar on yeast."

Pupils of Park Brow Community Primary School, KirkbyEven design technology and health & safety was explored by the eager bread makers.

“All the children had great fun during the project, tasting lots of varieties of bread, giving a rating on its texture and how it looked, tasted and smelled,” said Steve.

“Their own bread recipes were unique and wonderful and Mrs Foley, our school cook, made sure the bread buns that the children made were cooked for exactly the right amount of time.

"I can confirm that they were delicious as I tasted them all! This was a very rewarding and worthwhile topic and I’d like to thank Carrs Breadmaker for sending us the flour.”

Caroline Dale, marketing manager of Carrs Breadmaker, added.

“I am going to have a go at making my own version of bananas and cream bread as it’s my favourite fruit.

“The children’s enthusiasm and delight in this topic is obvious from the photos and I would like to hear of future recipes they come up with."

Ian Griffiths, product manager at Panasonic, added:

“The children of Park Brow school obviously had a lot of fun with this so I hope our breadmaker gives them even more inspiration".

Each month throughout 2009
Panasonic and Carrs donated a breadmaker and a supply of flour to the school submitting the best portfolio of work.
